Natural Progression: Sunset Study 01
24 × 48 in
Acrylic on canvas2025
This study is among the earliest Natural Progression paintings, created using a photographic reference as a way to begin observing and translating light through paint.
The colors are not exact translations of the original image, as color mixing was never the central focus of the work. Instead, this piece documents an early exploration of observation, light, and the emergence of a new painting process.
Please note that both the black and color surfaces carry a sheen in this painting. The black used in these early studies differs from later Natural Progression works, which use a matte black paint that will remain standard in the series moving forward.
This piece was painted and stretched by the artist as part of another early stage of experimentation. Minor cracking is present along portions of the edges, visible in the detail images, resulting from the attempt to wrap the painted surface fully around the canvas.
Future works in the series maintain a defined black border rather than a wrapped edge, making this piece a distinct record of progress within the evolving series.
